Flying solo.

I’m on my first solo holiday. I’m on Koh Samui, Thailand. And whilst I have been relaxing on the whole, I did sneak down to the beach, after the beach bar closed and in the half an hour between the bar closing, thus no one being there, and it being dark, to pick up rubbish.

It is so beautiful here. Mind you, I’m paying an extortionate amount for my little piece of paradise, but how can you swim at a beach where you need to keep your shoes on to avoid rubbish?

I think I must have picked up 30 drinking straws, 50 bottle tops, 6 flip flops/sandals plus a load is miscellaneous plastic, in a 10sqm area of beach.

I rarely say much in praise of Australian’s but in this regard, we would never let our beaches go this way, we would never walk past a load of rubbish on one of our beaches and do nothing about it.

We would never allow our children to swim just inches from logs of wood bobbing about, in fairly big waves, without removing it. Not just for the environment and ‘do our bit’ reasons but for the kids safety! If that wood clobbered that kid in the head coming off a wave, I wonder how much they would sue this hotel chain for?

Otherwise, it’s been delightful.
